Anthropogenic Climate Change Negatively Impacts Vegetation and Forage Conditions in the Greater Four Corners Region

چکیده

The Southwestern U.S. has been in a megadrought for the past two decades, stressing vegetation across region and leading to poor forage conditions on rangelands. How human-induced climate change affected air temperatures atmospheric evaporative demand greater Four Corners of Southwest, what have corresponding impacts vegetative productivity? We address this question via multi-step detection attribution analysis. first relate (quantified by Vapor Pressure Deficit, or VPD) precipitation Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) six unique plant-precipitation zones. VPD is strongly negatively related NDVI, strength relation similar magnitude precipitation. then use large ensemble simulations estimate increases attributable change. find that modest led VPD, with influence about twice inter-annual standard deviation 2020. Finally, we reductions NDVI due increased present terms total annual Aboveground Net Primary Productivity. conclude warming roughly doubled recent deficits, especially mid-precipitation areas (receiving 250–500 mm annually), concentrated New Mexico. These results indicate from human-caused are having persistent damaging productivity, significant implications ranchers other land users region.

Impacts of Climate Change on Vegetation Distribution No. 2 - Climate Change Induced Vegetation Shifts in the New World

After giving an overview of climate change induced vegetation shifts in the Palearctic region in our previous paper, in this article we review literature available in Web of Science on North and South America. We study different geographical regions such as Canada, Alaska, California, Southwestern, Eastern and Southeastern USA, the Great Lakes region, the Great Plains, intermontane basins and p...

Climate Change Impacts in the Asia/Pacific Region

In the Asia/Pacific region there is evidence of prominent increases in the intensity and/or frequency of many extreme events such as heat waves, tropical cyclones, prolonged dry spells, intense rainfall, tornadoes, snow avalanches, thunderstorms, and severe dust storms in the region. Furthermore, the region is highly subject to natural hazards, such as the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, the 2005 Pa...

Probabilistic Projections of Anthropogenic Climate Change Impacts on Precipitation for the Mid-Atlantic Region of the United States*

This study uses an empirical downscaling method based on self-organizing maps (SOMs) to produce highresolution, downscaled precipitation projections over the state of Pennsylvania in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States for the future period 2046–65. To examine the sensitivity of precipitation change to the water vapor increase brought by global warming, the authors test the following t...

Climate Change, Climate Modes, and Climate Impacts

■ Abstract Variability of the atmospheric and oceanic circulations in the earth system gives rise to an array of naturally occurring dynamical modes. Instead of being spatially independent or spatially uniform, climate variability in different parts of the globe is orchestrated by one or a combination of several climate modes, and global changes take place with a distinctive spatial pattern res...

Investigating the applicability of conventional vegetation indices for vegetation change detection in different environmental conditions

Vegetation indices have been developed to characterize and extract the Earth's vegetation cover from space using satellite images. For detection of vegetation changes, usually temporal images are independently analyzed or vegetation index differencing is implemented. A review on previous studies reveal that, in spite of developing several vegetation indices, to extract vegetation cover or veget...
